Concord Schools, District by District
In Concord your street decides the whole chain, and part of town gets to pick its high school.
Mount Diablo Unified covers all of Concord. You do not have to work out which district you are in before you can work out anything else.
What you do have to work out is the rest of it. Which elementary you are assigned to often does not tell you which middle or high school your kid ends up at, because a lot of the elementary zones split.

Here the splits are normal, not the exception
In most towns a split feeder is the odd exception. One elementary quietly sends kids two different ways and hardly anyone realises. In Concord it is not the exception. It is how most of the city works.
Going by the district's own boundary maps, 10 elementary schools around Concord feed more than one middle school, 7 feed more than one high school, and 6 of the middle schools split across two high schools.
- El Monte Elementary — Concord High or Mt. Diablo High
- El Dorado Middle — Concord High or Mt. Diablo High, split almost evenly
- Meadow Homes Elementary — Oak Grove Middle or Valley View Middle, though both end at Mt. Diablo High
- Wren Avenue Elementary — Concord High or Mt. Diablo High
- Oak Grove Middle — Ygnacio Valley High for most of its area, Mt. Diablo High for the Meadow Homes end of it
So the useful advice here is not to look for the one weird street. It is to assume your address decides the whole chain and go check it, because it probably does.
Part of Concord picks its own high school
If you live in northeast Concord, out toward Clayton, you may not have an assigned high school at all.
Clayton Valley High used to be the neighbourhood school for that area. In 2012 it became a charter, and charter schools do not have attendance boundaries. So those addresses are marked as choice, which means your kid can go to any Mount Diablo high school you pick rather than one you are given.
You can also apply to Clayton Valley itself, but now you apply on the same footing as a family from anywhere else in California. Being local no longer gets you in.
The schools
All of Concord. Mount Diablo Unified is the only district with attendance areas in the city, and it also covers Clayton, Pleasant Hill, Pacheco and most of Bay Point.
Across the whole district, 48.11% of students met the state English standard and 38.7% met the math one in 2024-25.

Why some of these scores need context
Three of the five lowest scoring schools in that table run dual language programs. Cambridge, Meadow Homes and Ygnacio Valley all teach a large share of their students in two languages, and Holbrook is a full language academy. Wren Avenue, which has the lowest English scores of all, does not, so this does not explain everything.
A single English proficiency number does not describe those schools well. A lot of those kids are taking the test in their second language. That is not an excuse for the number, it is just a different thing than the same number at a school where everyone tests in their first.
Worth knowing too that Meadow Homes, which is near the bottom of that table, had its entire campus rebuilt over about eighteen months and reopened in August 2025. New classrooms, heating and cooling, wiring, accessibility, furniture. The building a parent walks into now is not the building those scores came from.
Where the rating and the scores disagree
Same thing here as everywhere else in this series. The 1 to 10 rating and the state test results often point in different directions.
- Mountain View Elementary rates 6/10 with 29.77% in English, which is below the district average.
- Ayers Elementary rates 5/10, lower, with 51.08% in English. About twenty one points higher.
The rating folds in how much students improve and how different groups do, not just the test result. So a school can score well and still rate lower once the rest is counted.
One number worth staring at
Math at both Concord high schools falls off a cliff. Mt. Diablo High is at 12.46% and Concord High at 16.96%, against 38.11% and 43.16% in English at the same schools.
This is not specific to Concord. It runs across the whole district, and Ygnacio Valley High is at 11.79%. Worth knowing that high school testing only covers eleventh graders, so Mt. Diablo's number comes from 282 juniors rather than all 1,397 students. It is still the starkest figure on this page.
Two schools in Clayton that serve Concord
If you are in the northeast corner, your elementary and middle school may be in Clayton rather than Concord. Both are the strongest in the district, and both are a drive.

Monte Gardens, if you want to apply somewhere
Monte Gardens has the best English scores of any school in Concord proper and became an International Baccalaureate school in June 2025. It works two ways at once.
- If you live inside its boundary you just go. No application.
- If you live anywhere else in the district you can apply. Window is roughly mid october to mid november, with a kindergarten lottery each december for the following august.
- Priority runs: families inside the boundary first, then siblings, then staff, then everyone else in the district.
- If you are offered a place you have 24 hours to accept or decline.
It is not the district's only IB school. There are four: Monte Gardens, Sequoia, Oak Grove and Ygnacio Valley.
And two more you can apply to, in Pleasant Hill
Monte Gardens is not the only one. Mt. Diablo runs three schools of choice in total, and they belong to the district rather than to a town. Any address in Mount Diablo Unified can apply, whichever town it is in — Concord, Pleasant Hill, Clayton, Bay Point, and the parts of Walnut Creek and Martinez the district covers. So a Concord address can apply to all three, including the two in Pleasant Hill.
Monte Gardens Elementary (K-5)
3841 Larkspur Dr, Concord · 562 students
A neighbourhood school and a district-wide one at the same time. Inside its boundary you are simply assigned, no application. From anywhere else in the district you apply. An International Baccalaureate school since June 2025.
Sequoia Elementary (K-5)
277 Boyd Rd, Pleasant Hill · 594 students
No attendance zone at all, so every seat comes from an application. Also an International Baccalaureate school. The district does not publish any odds for the kindergarten lottery.
Sequoia Middle School (6-8)
265 Boyd Rd, Pleasant Hill · 882 students
Runs AVID across the whole school, plus STEAM electives. Nobody is zoned here, so the whole sixth grade arrives by lottery.
The district does not publish how many applicants get in, so anyone quoting you odds is guessing. Ask the district. None of the three takes children from outside Mt. Diablo, which for once works in your favour here.
If the district school isn't right
Concord has more non-district options than anywhere else nearby. Two charter schools are here, Clayton Valley Charter High and Rocketship Futuro, and Concord has more private schools than any other city in this area.
